Elementary Ministry Options
Saturday mornings ~ Kindergarten to Grade 5
CATECHIST ~ Under theguidance of the Director of Religious Education, Catechists are called to share our Catholic faith with the children of our parish. Catechists will follow a structured Catholic curriculum and lesson plan to prepare Saturday morning classroom activities. Each catechist is assigned at least one assistant and together they will attempt to link parish and home enabling the partnership necessary to form faith filled young Catholics.
CATECHIST ASSISTANT ~ Assistants work closely with the classroom catechist in whatever capacity the two agree upon. Assistants are often the “extra set of hands” so very much needed when working with children. While the assistant does not have the primary responsibility for planning the classroom activities, he or she may occasionally be asked to do so in the absence of the catechist.
YOUTH ASSISTANT ~ Mentors are needed to work one-on-one with those students who may have attention difficulties in class. Mentors will help to keep the student on task, enabling the catechist to focus on their lesson plan. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, or older siblings very often serve as mentors. This is also a wonderful way for middle or high school students to earn service hours.
FLOATING SUBSTITUTE CATECHIST ~ Catechists and assistants are asked to arrange for a substitute if they are unable to attend a scheduled class. Very often illness or an unexpected circumstance forces a scheduled volunteer to miss class without arranging a substitute. Floating substitutes are very much needed to step in under that circumstance. Floating substitutes are asked to commit to attending each week class is being held.
RESOURCE TEAM ~ The adult resource team meets during class time to plan and assist with special catechetical activities and programs scheduled throughout the religious education year. In the past, this group has produced fun skits, an All Saints Day parade, a mock soup kitchen & many other activities that the children love attending.
NURSERY VOLUNTEER ~ We are blessed to be able to offer a nursery for the toddlers of our Saturday morning ministry team. Adults and youth are needed each Saturday morning class is in session to play with & supervise these little ones.
SATURDAY OR WEEKDAY OFFICE VOLUNTEERS ~ There is an ongoing need for volunteers who are willing to help with many of our behind the scenes tasks such as cutting or preparing craft supplies, phone calls, stuffing envelopes, etc.
Please note: All parish volunteers who come in frequent contact with children are required to complete a volunteer application form which includes a criminal background check & attend the STAND video training session offered here at St. Louis.
